History of the University

The Siebold University of Nagasaki carries on in the spirit of Siebold's Narutaki Academy which helped in the modernization of Japan. The university was founded in April 1999 as the first national and/or public university in Japan to be named after a foreign national. The university also inherits the tradition of the Nagasaki Prefectural Women's Junior College that was once located near the Narutaki Academy.
Historically and geographically,Nagasaki Prefecture is Japan's gateway to Asia and an important window on the rest of world. The Siebold University of Nagasaki aims to reflect the appropriateness of Nagasaki as a place where modern Japan began. Our hope is for a continuing contribution to the promotion of academic study and cultural progress in this culturally and historically important region.
